Sexual Identity

Sexual identity (/sɛkʃuːəl aɪˈdɛntɪti/) is a term that refers to how an individual identifies in terms of their sexual orientation or sexual behavior. It is a deeply personal aspect of one's identity and is separate from sexual orientation and gender identity.

Etymology

The term "sexual identity" was first used in the mid-20th century in psychological and sociological studies, primarily in relation to the emergence of homosexuality and heterosexuality as distinct concepts. It is derived from the Latin "sexus", meaning "sex", and the English "identity", which comes from the Latin "identitas", meaning "sameness, oneness".
