Colistin (pronounced: koh-LIS-tin) is an antibiotic medication primarily used for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Etymology

The term "Colistin" is derived from the bacterium it is produced from, Bacillus polymyxa var. colistinus.

Usage

Colistin is used to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Colistin include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects may include kidney problems, neurotoxicity, and respiratory failure.
