Seven Year Itch (disambiguation)

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Seven Year Itch is a term that can refer to a variety of concepts in different fields. This article focuses on its medical interpretation, specifically in relation to skin conditions.

Medical Interpretation

In the medical field, the Seven Year Itch is often associated with persistent and long-term skin conditions, such as scabies. Scabies is a contagious skin infestation by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The most common symptoms are severe itchiness and a pimple-like rash. Occasionally, tiny burrows may be seen in the skin. In a first-ever infection, a person will usually develop symptoms in two to six weeks. During a second infection, symptoms may begin in as little as 24 hours. These symptoms can be present across most of the body or just certain areas such as the wrists, between fingers, or along the waistline.

Treatment

The first line of treatment for scabies is usually Permethrin cream. Other treatments include Lindane lotion, Ivermectin, and Sulfur ointment. Antihistamines may be used to help with symptoms of itching. It is also recommended that all members of a household be treated at the same time, as the condition is highly contagious.

Prevention

Prevention of scabies is achieved by avoiding direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. In the case of an outbreak in a community, mass treatment may be carried out. The mite that causes scabies is killed by exposure to heat, such as from hot-water washing of clothing, towels and bedding.
