Onychomatricoma (pronounced: on-i-ko-ma-tri-co-ma) is a rare benign tumor of the nail matrix that was first described by Baran and Kint in 1992.

Etymology

The term "Onychomatricoma" is derived from three Greek words: "Onycho" meaning nail, "matrix" referring to the origin or source, and "oma" indicating a tumor or growth.

Definition

Onychomatricoma is a unique neoplasm that originates from the nail matrix and is characterized by the formation of a fibroepithelial tumor. It is a rare condition that can affect both adults and children, but is more commonly seen in adults.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of Onychomatricoma include thickening of the nail plate, splitting or ridging of the nail, and a yellowish discoloration. In some cases, the affected nail may also exhibit a longitudinal depression or groove.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Onychomatricoma is often challenging due to its rarity and the non-specific nature of its symptoms. It is typically confirmed through a combination of clinical examination, dermoscopy, and histopathological analysis of a nail matrix biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment for Onychomatricoma typically involves surgical excision of the tumor. This is usually performed under local anesthesia and involves removal of the entire nail unit, including the nail plate, nail bed, and nail matrix.
