Reproductive Surgery
Reproductive surgery (/rɪˈprɒdʌktɪv ˈsɜːrdʒəri/) is a branch of medicine that deals with the surgical treatment of disorders affecting the reproductive system. The etymology of the term comes from the Latin reproducere meaning "to produce again" and the Greek cheirourgia meaning "hand work".
Types of Reproductive Surgery
There are several types of reproductive surgeries, including:
- Tubal ligation: A surgical procedure for female sterilization that involves severing and tying the fallopian tubes.
- Vasectomy: A surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception, where the vasa deferentia are cut and sealed.
- Hysterectomy: A surgical procedure to remove the uterus.
- Oophorectomy: A surgical procedure to remove one or both of the ovaries.
- Cervical cerclage: A treatment for cervical incompetence or insufficiency, where the cervix is sewn closed.
- Myomectomy: A surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids.
