Sugammadex
Sugammadex
Sugammadex (pronounced soo-gam-ma-dex) is a cyclodextrin derivative used in anesthesia to reverse the effects of neuromuscular-blocking drugs. It is marketed under the trade name Bridion by Merck & Co.
Etymology
The name "Sugammadex" is derived from its chemical structure, which is a gamma-cyclodextrin derivative. The "Suga-" prefix refers to its sugar-like structure, and "-dex" is a common suffix used in the names of cyclodextrin derivatives.
Usage
Sugammadex is used to reverse the effects of neuromuscular-blocking drugs, which are often used during surgery to prevent movement. It works by encapsulating the drug molecules, rendering them inactive. This allows for a rapid recovery from the effects of the neuromuscular-blocking drugs.
