Lincoln County, Tennessee

Lincoln County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,659. Its county seat and largest city is Fayetteville. The county is named for Benjamin Lincoln, an officer in the American Revolutionary War.

History

Lincoln County was established in 1809 from parts of Bedford County. The county was named in honor of General Benjamin Lincoln, who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes before European-American settlers arrived.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 571 square miles (1,480 km²), of which 570 square miles (1,476 km²) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) (0.2%) is water. The county is part of the Highland Rim and is characterized by rolling hills and fertile valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 34,659 people, 13,800 households, and 9,800 families residing in the county. The population density was 61 people per square mile (24/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy

The economy of Lincoln County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade being significant sectors. The county is known for its production of soybeans, corn, and wheat. Additionally, the presence of several manufacturing plants contributes to the local economy.

Education

Lincoln County is served by the Lincoln County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to the Fayetteville City Schools, which serves the city of Fayetteville.
