Pickett County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,001, making it the least populous county in Tennessee. Its county seat and only incorporated city is Byrdstown.

History

Pickett County was created in 1879 from portions of Fentress and Overton counties. It was named after Howell L. Pickett, a state legislator. The county has a rich history, with several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 174 square miles (450 km²), of which 163 square miles (420 km²) is land and 11 square miles (28 km²) (6.3%) is water. The county is located in the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 5,001 people, 2,200 households, and 1,400 families residing in the county. The population density was 30 people per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

Economy

The economy of Pickett County is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and small businesses. The presence of Dale Hollow Lake contributes significantly to the local economy through tourism and recreational activities.

Education

Pickett County is served by the Pickett County School District, which includes an elementary school and a high school. The county also has access to higher education institutions in nearby counties.
