Johnson County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,948. Its county seat is Mountain City. The county was established in 1836 and named after Thomas Johnson, an early settler and state legislator.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 303 square miles (780 km²), of which 298 square miles (770 km²) is land and 5.1 square miles (13 km²) (1.7%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian Mountains and features a rugged terrain with numerous mountains and valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 17,948 people, 7,200 households, and 4,800 families residing in the county. The population density was 60 people per square mile (23/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

The economy of Johnson County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The county's mountainous terrain and natural beauty attract visitors for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping.

Johnson County is served by the Johnson County School District, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Johnson County High School.
