Madison County is a county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 98,923. Its county seat is Jackson. The county was established in 1821 and named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States.

History[edit]

Madison County was created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1821. It was named in honor of James Madison, who served as the fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. The county seat, Jackson, was named after Andrew Jackson, who later became the seventh President of the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 559 square miles (1,450 km²), of which 557 square miles (1,440 km²) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) (0.4%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 98,923 people, 37,000 households, and 24,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 177 people per square mile (68/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 60.5% White, 35.0% Black or African American, 1.0% Asian, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

Madison County is governed by a county commission and a county mayor. The county commission is composed of representatives from various districts within the county.

The county is served by the Jackson-Madison County School System, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education institutions in the county include Union University and Lane College.

Major highways in Madison County include Interstate 40, U.S. Route 45, and U.S. Route 70. The county is also served by the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport.
