Smith County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,904. Its county seat is Carthage. The county was established in 1799 and named after Daniel Smith, a pioneer surveyor and soldier.

History

Smith County was created in 1799 from a portion of Sumner County. The county is named in honor of Daniel Smith, a Revolutionary War veteran and prominent surveyor who played a significant role in the early history of Tennessee.

Geography

Smith County is located in the central part of Tennessee.
