Franklin County, Tennessee is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 42,774. The county seat is Winchester. Franklin County is part of the Tullahoma-Manchester Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Franklin County was established in 1807 and named in honor of Benjamin Franklin. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee and other Native American tribes. European-American settlers began to arrive in the late 18th century, and the county was officially formed from parts of Warren and Rutherford counties.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 576 square miles (1,490 km²), of which 555 square miles (1,440 km²) is land and 21 square miles (54 km²) (3.6%) is water. The county is located in the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 42,774 people, 17,000 households, and 11,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 77 people per square mile (30/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.5% White, 5.2% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.
Economy
The economy of Franklin County is diverse, with key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The county is known for its production of soybeans, corn, and livestock. Manufacturing includes automotive parts, textiles, and food processing. Tourism is bolstered by the presence of Tims Ford Lake and the University of the South in Sewanee.
Education
Franklin County is served by the Franklin County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education is provided by the University of the South, a private liberal arts college located in Sewanee.
