Sumner County, Tennessee

Sumner County, Tennessee is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 196,281. The county seat is Gallatin. The county is named for Jethro Sumner, a Brigadier General during the American Revolutionary War.

History

Sumner County was established in 1786, making it one of the oldest counties in Tennessee. It was formed from part of Davidson County. The county played a significant role during the early settlement of the state and was a site of numerous conflicts between settlers and Native American tribes.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 543 square miles (1,410 km²), of which 529 square miles (1,370 km²) is land and 14 square miles (36 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Area.

As of the 2020 census, there were 196,281 people, 71,375 households, and 52,345 families residing in the county. The population density was 371 people per square mile (143/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 85.2% White, 8.1% Black or African American, 1.5% Asian, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.1% of the population.

Government

Sumner County is governed by a county commission, which consists of 24 members elected from 12 districts. The county executive is the chief administrative officer and is elected by the voters of the county.

Education

The county is served by the Sumner County Schools system, which operates numerous elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the county. Higher education institutions include Volunteer State Community College.
