Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,159. Its county seat and largest city is Lawrenceburg. The county was created in 1817 and named in honor of James Lawrence, a naval officer during the War of 1812.
History
Lawrence County was established in 1817 from lands previously part of Hickman and Giles counties. The county was named after James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812 known for his command "Don't give up the ship!"
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 618 square miles (1,600 km²), of which 617 square miles (1,600 km²) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) (0.2%) is water.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 44,159 people, 17,000 households, and 12,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 71 people per square mile (27/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.5% White, 2.0% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.
