Roane County, Tennessee is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 53,382. Its county seat is Kingston. Roane County is included in the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Roane County was established in 1801 and named for Archibald Roane, the second Governor of Tennessee. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Civil War and its development during the Industrial Revolution.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 395 square miles (1,020 km²), of which 361 square miles (930 km²) is land and 34 square miles (88 km²) (8.6%) is water. The county is located in the Eastern Time Zone.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 53,382 people, 22,000 households, and 15,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 148 people per square mile (57/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.5% White, 3.2% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.6% Asian, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
Economy
Roane County's economy is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, healthcare, and education. The county is home to several industrial parks and is part of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) region, which provides numerous jobs in energy production and management.
Education
Roane County is served by the Roane County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education is provided by Roane State Community College, which offers a variety of degree programs and continuing education opportunities.
