Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,237. Its county seat is Jasper. The county was established in 1817 and named for Francis Marion, a brigadier general from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.

History

Marion County was established on November 20, 1817, from lands acquired from the Cherokee people. The county was named in honor of Francis Marion, a military officer who served in the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 512 square miles (1,330 km²), of which 498 square miles (1,290 km²) is land and 14 square miles (36 km²) (2.7%) is water. The county is part of the Chattanooga, TN-GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 28,237 people, 11,000 households, and 7,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 57 people per square mile (22/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.5% White, 3.5% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
