Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,802. Its county seat is Maynardville.
History[edit]
Union County was formed in 1850 from portions of Grainger, Claiborne, Campbell, Anderson, and Knox counties. The county was named to commemorate the Union sentiment of the area during the American Civil War.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 247 square miles (640 km²), of which 224 square miles (580 km²) is land and 23 square miles (60 km²) (9.3%) is water. The county is situated in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, which is characterized by long, narrow ridges and valleys.

Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 19,802 people, 7,764 households, and 5,512 families residing in the county. The population density was 88 people per square mile (34/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.5% White, 0.4% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 1.6% from two or more races. 1.0% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Union County is served by the Union County Public Schools system, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Union County High School.
Notable people[edit]
- Roy Acuff, a prominent country music singer and fiddler, was born in Maynardville.
- Chet Atkins, a renowned guitarist and record producer, was also born in the county.
