Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 69,669. Its county seat is Greeneville, and it is the largest city in the county. The county was established in 1783 and named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a major general in the American Revolutionary War.

History

Greene County was formed in 1783 from the Washington District. It was named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The county has a rich history, including its role in the Civil War and its early settlement by European Americans.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 624 square miles (1,620 km²), of which 622 square miles (1,610 km²) is land and 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) (0.4%) is water.
