Hawkins County, Tennessee is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,721. Its county seat is Rogersville, which is Tennessee's second-oldest town. The county was established in 1787 and named for Benjamin Hawkins, a U.S. Senator from North Carolina.

History

Hawkins County was created in 1787 from parts of Sullivan County and Greene County. It was named in honor of Benjamin Hawkins, who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a U.S. Senator from North Carolina. The county has a rich history, including its role in the early settlement of Tennessee and its involvement in the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 500 square miles (1,300 km²), of which 487 square miles (1,260 km²) is land and 13 square miles (34 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian Mountains and features a mix of mountainous terrain and fertile valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 56,721 people, 22,000 households, and 15,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 116 people per square mile (45/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy

The economy of Hawkins County is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, agriculture, and retail. The county is home to several industrial parks and has a strong presence in the automotive and chemical manufacturing sectors.
