Chester County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,341. Its county seat is Henderson. The county was created in 1879 and named for Robert I. Chester, a prominent early settler and politician.

History

Chester County was established in 1879 from parts of Hardeman, Henderson, McNairy, and Madison counties. The county was named in honor of Robert I. Chester, who was a postmaster and a prominent figure in the area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 286 square miles (740 km²), of which 286 square miles (740 km²) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km²) (0.08%) is water.

The racial makeup of the county was 85.2% White, 11.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.
