Charles City County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,773. Its county seat is the unincorporated community of Charles City.

History[edit]

Charles City County is one of the original shires of Virginia established by the Virginia Company in 1634. It was named after Charles I of England. The county has a rich history, including significant events during the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 204 square miles (530 km²), of which 183 square miles (470 km²) is land and 21 square miles (54 km²) (10.3%) is water. The county is located in the Tidewater region of Virginia.

As of the census of 2020, there were 6,773 people, 2,800 households, and 1,900 families residing in the county. The population density was 37 people per square mile (14/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 50.1% White, 40.2% African American, 5.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.

Charles City County is governed by a Board of Supervisors. The county is part of Virginia's 3rd congressional district.

The county is served by the Charles City County Public Schools system, which includes Charles City County Elementary School and Charles City County High School.
