Spotsylvania County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 140,032. Its county seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse. The county was established in 1721 and is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Spotsylvania County was established in 1721 from parts of Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. It was named for Alexander Spotswood, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1710 to 1722. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, with notable battles such as the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.

Geography

Spotsylvania County is located in northeastern Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 414 square miles, of which 401 square miles is land and 13 square miles is water. The county is bordered by the Rappahannock River to the north and the Rapidan River to the south.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 140,032 people, 47,000 households, and 36,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 350 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 70% White, 20% African American, 5% Asian, and 5% from other races.
