Surry County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,561. Its county seat is Surry.
History[edit]
Surry County was formed in 1652 from a portion of James City County. It was named after the county of Surrey in England. The county has a rich history, including its role in the early colonial period and its involvement in the American Civil War.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 310 square miles (800 km²), of which 279 square miles (720 km²) is land and 31 square miles (80 km²) (10.0%) is water. The county is located in the southeastern part of the state, along the James River.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 6,561 people, 2,678 households, and 1,850 families residing in the county. The population density was 23.5 people per square mile (9.1/km²).
Government and Politics[edit]
Surry County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which is elected by the residents. The county is part of Virginia's 4th congressional district.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Surry County is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The county is known for its ham production, which is a significant part of its agricultural output.

Surry County Public Schools operates the public school system in the county. The system includes Surry County High School, Luther Porter Jackson Middle School, and Surry Elementary School.
