Madison County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,261. Its county seat is Madison.
History
Madison County was established in December 1792 from Culpeper County. It was named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and the "Father of the Constitution".
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 322 square miles (830 km²), of which 321 square miles (830 km²) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²) (0.4%) is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2020, there were 13,261 people, 5,000 households, and 3,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (16/km²). There were 5,500 housing units at an average density of 17 per square mile (6.6/km²).
Government and infrastructure
The county is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district. The county also has a Sheriff, Commonwealth's Attorney, Treasurer, and Commissioner of the Revenue.

Madison County is served by Madison County Public Schools, which includes Madison County High School, Wetsel Middle School, and Madison Primary School.
