Buena Vista, Virginia


Buena Vista is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,478. The city is part of the Lexington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History[edit]
Buena Vista was originally known as "Hart's Bottom." The area was settled in the early 18th century and was primarily agricultural. The city was officially incorporated in 1892. The name "Buena Vista" is derived from the Battle of Buena Vista, a significant battle during the Mexican-American War.
Geography[edit]
Buena Vista is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Maury River to the west. The city covers a total area of 6.8 square miles, of which 6.7 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, the racial makeup of the city was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Asian, and other races. The median household income was $34,000, and the per capita income was $18,000.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Buena Vista has historically been based on agriculture and manufacturing. In recent years, the city has seen growth in the service sector, particularly in education and healthcare. Southern Virginia University, a private liberal arts university, is a significant employer in the area.

Buena Vista is served by the Buena Vista City Public Schools system, which includes Parry McCluer High School, Parry McCluer Middle School, and Enderly Heights Elementary School. The city is also home to Southern Virginia University.
Transportation[edit]
Buena Vista is accessible via U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 81. The city is also served by the Maury River for limited water transport. Public transportation options are limited, but the city is within driving distance of larger transportation hubs in Roanoke and Charlottesville.

- Robert E. Lee, Confederate general, had connections to the area through his role at Washington and Lee University in nearby Lexington.
- Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the mechanical reaper, had family ties to the region.
