Warren County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,127. The county seat is Front Royal. The county was established in 1836 and is named after Joseph Warren, a physician and general in the American Revolutionary War.

History

Warren County was formed in 1836 from parts of Frederick and Shenandoah counties. The county is named after Joseph Warren, a hero of the American Revolutionary War who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 219 square miles (570 km²), of which 213 square miles (550 km²) is land and 6 square miles (16 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is located in the northern part of the state and is part of the Shenandoah Valley region.

The racial makeup of the county was 89.1% White, 5.1% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.8% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population.
