Campbell County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 55,596. Its county seat is Rustburg. Campbell County is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Campbell County was established in 1782 from part of Bedford County. It was named for General William Campbell, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 507 square miles (1,310 km²), of which 504 square miles (1,310 km²) is land and 3 square miles (7.8 km²) (0.6%) is water.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 55,596 people, 21,000 households, and 15,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 110 people per square mile (42/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 80.5% White, 15.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.5% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.
Government and politics
Campbell County is governed by a Board of Supervisors consisting of seven members, each elected from one of the county's seven magisterial districts. The county also has a county administrator who oversees the day-to-day operations of the county government.
Education
The county is served by Campbell County Public Schools, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to several private schools and is in proximity to higher education institutions in Lynchburg.
