Montgomery County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 99,721. The county seat is Christiansburg, and the largest town is Blacksburg, home to Virginia Tech.
History
Montgomery County was established in 1776 from Fincastle County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general who was killed in 1775 during the Battle of Quebec.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 389 square miles (1,010 km²), of which 387 square miles (1,000 km²) is land and 2 square miles (5.2 km²) (0.5%) is water.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 99,721 people, 36,946 households, and 20,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 258 people per square mile (100/km²).

Montgomery County is served by the Montgomery County Public Schools system. The county is also home to Virginia Tech, a major public research university.
