New Kent County is a county located in the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,945. Its county seat is New Kent.
History
New Kent County was established in 1654 from York County. It was named after Kent, a county in England. The county has a rich history, including significant events during the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.
Geography
New Kent County is part of the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 223 square miles, of which 210 square miles is land and 13 square miles is water.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 22,945 people, 8,000 households, and 6,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 109 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 80% White, 15% African American, and 5% from other races.
Government and Politics
New Kent County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which consists of five members elected from each of the county's five districts. The county is part of Virginia's 1st congressional district.
Education
The county is served by New Kent County Public Schools, which includes New Kent Elementary School, George W. Watkins Elementary School, New Kent Middle School, and New Kent High School.
Transportation
New Kent County is served by several major highways, including Interstate 64, U.S. Route 60, and Virginia State Route 33. The county also has a small public airport, New Kent County Airport.
Notable People
- Martha Washington, the wife of George Washington, was born in New Kent County.
- William Claiborne, an early settler and politician, also had ties to the county.
