Appomattox County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,971. Its county seat is Appomattox.

History

Appomattox County was created in 1845 from parts of Buckingham, Prince Edward, Campbell, and Charlotte counties. The county is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Appomattox Court House, where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 335 square miles (870 km²), of which 334 square miles (870 km²) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²) (0.4%) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 15,971 people, 6,000 households, and 4,200 families residing in the county. The population density was 48 people per square mile (19/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 80.5% White, 16.5% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

Government and infrastructure

The county is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which is composed of representatives from each of the county's five districts. The county also has a Sheriff's Office, which provides law enforcement services.

Appomattox County is served by the Appomattox County Public Schools system, which includes Appomattox County High School, Appomattox Middle School, and several elementary schools.
