History

Culpeper County was established in 1749, carved out from Orange County. It was named after Thomas Colepeper, 2nd Baron Colepeper, colonial governor of Virginia from 1677 to 1683. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, with numerous battles and skirmishes occurring within its borders, including the Battle of Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle of the war.
