Culpeper County is a county located in the central part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,252. The county seat and largest town is Culpeper.
History
Culpeper County was established in 1749, carved out from Orange County. It was named after Thomas Colepeper, 2nd Baron Colepeper, colonial governor of Virginia from 1677 to 1683. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, with numerous battles and skirmishes occurring within its borders, including the Battle of Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle of the war.
Geography
Culpeper County covers a total area of 383 square miles, of which 379 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The county is part of the Piedmont region of Virginia, characterized by rolling hills and fertile farmland.
