Dickenson County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,324. Its county seat is Clintwood.
History
Dickenson County was formed in 1880 from parts of Buchanan, Russell, and Wise counties. It was named for William J. Dickenson, a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 334 square miles (870 km²), of which 331 square miles (860 km²) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²) (1.0%) is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2020, there were 14,324 people, 6,000 households, and 4,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 43 people per square mile (17/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.5% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races. 0.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Economy
The economy of Dickenson County has traditionally been based on coal mining and agriculture. In recent years, there has been a shift towards tourism and service industries.

Dickenson County is served by the Dickenson County Public Schools system, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school.
