Amelia County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,690. Its county seat is Amelia Court House.
History[edit]
Amelia County was created in 1735 from parts of Prince George and Brunswick counties. It was named in honor of Princess Amelia of Great Britain, daughter of King George II.
During the American Civil War, Amelia County was the site of the Battle of Amelia Springs and the Battle of Sayler's Creek, which were part of the Appomattox Campaign.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 359 square miles (930 km²), of which 355 square miles (920 km²) is land and 4 square miles (10 km²) (1.1%) is water.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 12,690 people, 4,900 households, and 3,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 36 people per square mile (14/km²).
Government and Politics[edit]
Amelia County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which consists of five members elected from single-member districts. The county is part of Virginia's 7th congressional district.

The county is served by Amelia County Public Schools, which includes Amelia County High School, Amelia County Middle School, and Amelia County Elementary School.
