Lancaster County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,519. Its county seat is Lancaster. The county is located on the Northern Neck peninsula and is part of the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA, an American Viticultural Area.
History
Lancaster County was established in 1651 from parts of Northumberland and York counties. The county was named for the English county of Lancashire.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 231 square miles (600 km²), of which 133 square miles (340 km²) is land and 98 square miles (250 km²) (42.4%) is water. The county is bounded by the Rappahannock River to the south and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.

Demographics
As of the census of 2020, there were 10,519 people, 4,500 households, and 2,800 families residing in the county. The population density was 79 people per square mile (31/km²). There were 6,498 housing units at an average density of 49 per square mile (19/km²).
