Fluvanna County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,029. Its county seat is Palmyra. The county was established in 1777 and is part of the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Fluvanna County was formed in 1777 from part of Albemarle County. The name "Fluvanna" comes from an early name for the James River, which was called the "Fluvanna River" in honor of Queen Anne of Great Britain. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.
Geography
Fluvanna County is located in the central part of Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 290 square miles, of which 286 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The county is bordered by Louisa County to the north, Goochland County to the east, Cumberland County to the south, and Buckingham County and Albemarle County to the west.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 27,029 people, 10,000 households, and 7,500 families residing in the county. The population density was approximately 94 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with significant African American and smaller Asian American and Hispanic populations.
Government and Politics
Fluvanna County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which consists of representatives from each of the county's five magisterial districts. The county also has a County Administrator who oversees the day-to-day operations of the county government.
Education
The county is served by Fluvanna County Public Schools, which includes Fluvanna County High School, Fluvanna Middle School, and several elementary schools. The county also has access to higher education institutions in nearby Charlottesville.
