Greene County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,552. Its county seat is Stanardsville.

History

Greene County was established in 1838 from Orange County. It was named for Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 157 square miles (410 km²), of which 156 square miles (400 km²) is land and 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²) (0.6%) is water.

As of the census of 2020, there were 20,552 people, 7,780 households, and 5,678 families residing in the county. The population density was 131.7 people per square mile (50.8/km²). There were 8,326 housing units at an average density of 53.5 per square mile (20.7/km²).

The county is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which consists of five members elected from each of the county's five districts. The county also has a Sheriff's Office, which provides law enforcement services.
