York County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 70,745. The county seat is Yorktown. York County is part of the Virginia Peninsula and is included in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
History
York County was formed in 1634 as one of the original eight shires of Virginia. It was named after York, England. The county played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, particularly during the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, which was the last major land battle of the war.
Geography
York County is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the eastern part of the state. It is bordered by the York River to the north and the James River to the south. The county has a total area of 215 square miles, of which 105 square miles is land and 110 square miles is water.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 70,745 people, 25,000 households, and 18,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 673 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 75% White, 12% African American, 6% Asian, and 7% from other races.
Economy
York County's economy is diverse, with significant contributions from the military, tourism, and manufacturing sectors. The presence of military installations such as Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Langley Air Force Base plays a crucial role in the local economy.
Education
York County is served by the York County School Division, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to Thomas Nelson Community College and is in proximity to several major universities, including College of William & Mary.
Government
York County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, each elected from one of the county's five districts. The county also has a County Administrator who oversees daily operations.
Transportation
Major highways in York County include Interstate 64, U.S. Route 17, and Virginia State Route 199. The county is also served by the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and the Amtrak rail service.
