Wine

Wine (/waɪn/) is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other fruits. The natural chemical balance of grapes lets them ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes, water, or other nutrients.

Etymology

The word "wine" is derived from the Old English win, which comes from the Proto-Germanic *winam, an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, "wine" or "(grape) vine", itself derived from the Proto-Indo-European stem *win-o- (cf. Armenian: գինի, gini; Ancient Greek: οἶνος oinos; Aeolic Greek: ϝοῖνος woinos; Hittite: wiyana; Lycian: oino).

Types of Wine

There are many different types of wine, including red wine, white wine, rose wine, and sparkling wine. Each type of wine has its own unique characteristics and flavors, which are influenced by factors such as the type of grape used, the fermentation process, and the region in which the wine is produced.

Red Wine

Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored grape varieties. The actual color of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines.

White Wine

White wine is a wine that is fermented without skin contact. The color can be straw-yellow, yellow-green, or yellow-gold. It is produced by the alcoholic fermentation of the non-colored pulp of grapes, which may have a skin of any color.

Rose Wine

Rose wine or rosé is a type of wine that incorporates some of the color from the grape skins, but not enough to qualify it as a red wine. It may be the oldest known type of wine, as it is the most straightforward to make with the skin contact method.

Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wine is a wine with significant levels of carbon dioxide in it, making it fizzy. The carbon dioxide may result from natural fermentation, either in a bottle, as with the traditional method, in a large tank designed to withstand the pressures involved (as in the Charmat process), or as a result of carbon dioxide injection.
