Microclimate
Microclimate
Microclimate (/ˈmaɪ.kroʊ.klaɪ.mət/), from the Greek words micro meaning "small" and climate meaning "inclination", is a local atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area. The term may refer to areas as small as a few square feet (for example a garden bed) or as large as many square miles.
Definition
In meteorology, a microclimate is a climate that has distinctive characteristics within a small area, usually because of differences in topography or cover. Microclimates exist, for example, near bodies of water which may cool the local atmosphere, or in heavily urban areas where brick, concrete, and asphalt absorb the sun's energy, heat up, and re-radiate that heat to the ambient air: the resulting urban heat island is a kind of microclimate.
Factors
The most important factors that contribute to the creation of a microclimate are the orientation of the sun, the geographical location, the presence of vegetation and bodies of water, and the design of the built environment.
Impact on Health
Microclimates have significant impacts on health, particularly in urban areas. They can affect the spread of diseases, the quality of air, and the overall well-being of individuals.
