Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Integrated Pest Management (IPM), pronounced as /ɪnˈteɪɡreɪtɪd pɛst mænɪdʒmənt/, is a broad-based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests. IPM aims to suppress pest populations below the economic injury level (EIL).

Etymology

The term "Integrated Pest Management" was first coined in the 1970s, as a reaction to the overuse of pesticides and the resulting resistance developed by pests. The word "integrated" refers to the combination of multiple strategies, "pest" refers to the target organism, and "management" refers to the control and regulation of the pests.

Definition

IPM is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. Pesticides are used only after monitoring indicates they are needed according to established guidelines, and treatments are made with the goal of removing only the target organism.

Related Terms

  • Biological control: The use of natural enemies — predators, parasites, pathogens, and competitors — to control pests and their damage.
  • Habitat manipulation: Modifying the environment to make it less suitable for pests.
  • Cultural practices: Changes in farming practices that reduce pest establishment, reproduction, dispersal, and survival.
  • Economic Injury Level (EIL): The population density at which pests will cause economic damage.
  • Pesticides: Substances used to kill pests, including insects, rodents, fungi, and unwanted plants (weeds).
