Staphylococcal infection (pronunciation: staf-uh-loh-kok-uhl in-fek-shuhn) is a group of infections caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus.

Etymology

The term "Staphylococcal" is derived from the Greek words "staphyle" meaning a bunch of grapes, and "kokkos" meaning a berry. This is in reference to the grape-like clusters that these bacteria form.

Definition

Staphylococcal infections are infections caused by different strains of Staphylococcus bacteria. These bacteria are gram-positive, round (cocci), and occur in clusters resembling a bunch of grapes. They are capable of causing various diseases through either toxin production or invasion.
