Paritaprevir (pronounced as pah-ri-ta-pre-vir) is a Hepatitis C antiviral drug that is used in combination with other medications to treat chronic (long-lasting) hepatitis C, a viral infection of the liver. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Paritaprevir is in a class of medications called HCV protease inhibitors.
Etymology
The name "Paritaprevir" is derived from parts of the words 'protease inhibitor', 'antiviral', and 'hepatitis C virus', which describe the drug's function and target.
Usage
Paritaprevir is used with ribavirin and other medications to treat hepatitis C in adults. It is taken orally, usually once daily. It is included in the combination drug product Viekira Pak, which also contains ombitasvir, dasabuvir, and ritonavir.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Paritaprevir include fatigue, nausea, itching, skin rash, sleep problems, and weakness. Severe side effects may include liver problems, allergic reactions, and increased susceptibility to infections.
