Ombitasvir

Ombitasvir (pronounced om-bi-tas-vir) is an antiviral drug used in combination with other medications to treat hepatitis C. It is a HCV NS5A inhibitor, which means it works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body.

Etymology

The name "Ombitasvir" is derived from the components of the drug: "Om" for macrocyclic, "bit" for bifunctional, "as" for aspartate, and "vir" for virus, indicating its use against viral infections.

Usage

Ombitasvir is used as part of a combination therapy. That means you need to take it with other drugs. It is used with paritaprevir and ritonavir to treat chronic (long-lasting) hepatitis C, a viral infection of the liver. It may be used with ribavirin in certain situations.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ombitasvir can include fatigue, itching, feeling weak or lack of energy, nausea, and sleep problems. Serious side effects can include liver problems.
