President of the United States
The President of the United States (POTUS) (/prɛzɪdənt ɒv ðə juːnaɪtɪd steɪts/) is the head of state and head of government of the United States of America. The president directs the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces.
Etymology
The term "President" was borrowed from the British parliamentary system, where it was used to refer to the presiding officer of a meeting. The term "United States" was first used in the Declaration of Independence to refer to the union of the thirteen American colonies.
