Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (pronunciation: hi-per-tro-fik kar-dee-o-my-op-a-thi) is a medical condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle without any obvious cause.
Etymology
The term "Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy" is derived from three Greek words: "hyper" meaning over or excessive, "trophe" meaning nourishment, and "cardia" meaning heart. "Myopathy" is derived from "myo" meaning muscle and "pathy" meaning disease. Thus, the term literally translates to "over-nourished heart muscle disease."
Definition
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick, making it harder for the heart to pump blood. It is often inherited and can affect people of any age.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy may include chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, and heart palpitations. However, some people with the condition may have few, if any, symptoms and can lead normal lives.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy typically involves a physical exam, Echocardiogram, and Electrocardiogram. Genetic testing may also be used to identify the condition in family members of those already diagnosed.
Treatment
Treatment for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy may include medications, Cardiac Catheterization, or surgery. In some cases, an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) may be recommended.
