hyperkeratosis - (pronounced) (HY-per-KAYR-uh-TOH-sis) A condition characterized by a thickening of the outer layer of skin, which is made up of keratin (a tough, protective protein). It can be caused by normal use (corns, calluses), chronic inflammation (eczema), or genetic disorders (X-linked ichthyosis, ichthyosis vulgaris)
