Cumberland County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,675. Its county seat is Cumberland.

History[edit]

Cumberland County was established in 1749 from the eastern portion of Goochland County. The county was named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, the second son of King George II.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 300 square miles (780 km²), of which 297 square miles (770 km²) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²) (1.1%) is water.

As of the census of 2020, there were 9,675 people, 3,800 households, and 2,600 families residing in the county. The population density was 32 people per square mile (12/km²). There were 4,200 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (5.4/km²).

Government and infrastructure[edit]

The county is governed by a Board of Supervisors, with each member representing one of the five districts in the county. The county also has a County Administrator who oversees the daily operations of the county government.

Cumberland County is served by Cumberland County Public Schools, which includes Cumberland Elementary School, Cumberland Middle School, and Cumberland High School.
