Loudon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 54,068. Its county seat is Loudon. The county was created in 1870 from portions of Roane, Blount, and Monroe counties.

History[edit]

Loudon County was established in 1870. The county is named after Fort Loudoun, a British colonial-era fort built in 1756. The fort was named for John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun, who was the commander of British forces in North America at the time.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 247 square miles (640 km²), of which 229 square miles (590 km²) is land and 18 square miles (47 km²) (7.3%) is water. The Tennessee River flows through the county, providing a significant waterway for transportation and recreation.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 54,068 people, 21,000 households, and 15,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 236 people per square mile (91/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Loudon County is diverse, with key sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, and retail. The county is home to several industrial parks and has a strong agricultural base, particularly in the production of livestock and crops.
