Trousdale County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 11,000. Its county seat is Hartsville, which is also the only incorporated city in the county. Trousdale County is part of the Nashville metropolitan area.

History

Trousdale County was established in 1870 from parts of Macon, Smith, Sumner, and Wilson counties. It was named in honor of William Trousdale, a former governor of Tennessee and a veteran of the Mexican-American War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 117 square miles (300 km²), of which 114 square miles (295 km²) is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is located in the Highland Rim region of Tennessee.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were approximately 11,000 people, with a population density of about 96 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Government

Trousdale County operates under a consolidated city-county government, which means that the city of Hartsville and Trousdale County are governed as a single entity. This form of government is relatively rare in the United States.

Education

The county is served by the Trousdale County School District, which includes Trousdale County High School, Jim Satterfield Middle School, and Trousdale County Elementary School.

Economy

The economy of Trousdale County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county is known for its production of tobacco, corn, and soybeans.
