Haywood County is a county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,377. Its county seat is Brownsville. The county was created in 1823 and named for John Haywood, a judge of the North Carolina Supreme Court and later a historian of Tennessee.
History
Haywood County was established in 1823 from parts of Madison, Shelby, and Hardeman counties. The county was named in honor of John Haywood, a prominent judge and historian. The county seat, Brownsville, was named after Jacob Jennings Brown, a War of 1812 hero.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 534 square miles (1,380 km²), of which 533 square miles (1,380 km²) is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²) (0.2%) is water.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 17,377 people, 6,500 households, and 4,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 33 people per square mile (13/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 50.1% White, 47.2% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
Economy
The economy of Haywood County is primarily based on agriculture, with cotton being the main crop. Other significant crops include soybeans, corn, and wheat. The county also has a growing manufacturing sector, with several factories and plants providing employment to the local population.

Haywood County is served by the Haywood County School District, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Haywood High School.
